Wisbech Rugby Club’s annual players and awards dinner
Around 50 players and officials attended Wisbech Rugby Club’s annual players and awards dinner on Maunday Thursday at the club house. Those gathered enjoyed a sausage and mash supper and an all round entertaining evening as the awards were handed out to the outstanding players of the season.
Chairman John Claydon delivered a speech outlining the clubs plans to extend the existing facilities in order to be able to continue the expansion of membership in both the senior and junior sections. There was high praise for the clubs achievements this year in London North East division three, finishing third in a league that is considered to be the highest that the club have played in. John went on to thank the committee members and associates whose support has seen the club flourish over the season. There was particular acknowledgement given to Ben Harrington for the organisation of the annual golf day, Steve Drawbridge for not only his input on the coaching side but his backroom work as the club’s contact at county level and beyond and Dave Dobson for his organisation of the fixtures and match day referees. Secretary Kate Bennett was presented with a bouquet of flowers in recognition of her efforts in all matters administration and the unstinting input of the bar personnel who maintain the lifeblood of the club was applauded.
Captain Tom Long also gave a speech and presented the first team awards to the player of the year, James Napier and the most improved, Greg Brownlow. Tom ended his speech looking forward to next season identifying the target of promotion for the club. Standing in for the second team skipper, Jim Mitchell presented the sides’ player of the year award to Jack Malkin and the most improved to Elliot Peck.
There were further awards for the player’s player of the year, Will Pettit, and the chairman’s award went to Suzanne England for her work as treasurer over the year. Clubman of the year was awarded to Andy Heighton for his efforts as second team captain over the past three years.
All of the awards were toasted to the cream of Wisbech Rugby Club and all those who attended will look forward to a well deserved break at the end of this season to prepare for next campaign during the summer.
Next Saturday, Wisbech travel to Billericay for the last league game of the season whilst the second team take on Norwich at Harecroft Road.
